Building a Magento online store in 24 hours!

No matter how fantastic it may sound – it is possible.

We took part in the MageDerby contest — something like an adventure, when teams from all over the world simultaneously face a challenge to create a functional website according to customer’s specification in 24 hours.

The terms of the competition determined that teams could use only Magento open source solutions, a limited number of developers and a standardized resource stack (version control system, hosting etc.)

Of course, there was some groundwork beforehand:

• validation of the general plan of interaction within the team;
• assertion of the tasks closure sequence (which is critical for such deadlines);
• affirmation of the working schedule.

Those who have experience with Magento 2 projects, as well as the developers of eCommerce solutions in general know that on average launch of a full-fledged project requires from 2 to 6 months to get a high-quality result.

In this case, some stages of the work were distributed perfectly well.

Issues of design development did not require any approval from the customer, which allowed to exclude a significant time interval of work.
Quality of the graphics provided was sufficient for easy processing.
Product information was provided in efficient and well-organized structure in csv format.
The number of products and their typing also worked towards quick project adjustments.

The task expected implementation of non-standard features of two types:

• Individual product: the ability to order creation of a single individual product from two different ones. In general, this feature was successfully implemented, but we weren’t satisfied with its visual component: we did not have enough time to work out both the feature visualization and the necessary design of graphic elements.
• The second feature was the quantity limit of products a customer could order. We started to implement this feature, but quickly realized that the time left for the project was not enough to complete and test the result. Thus, we decided to focus on setting up Magento out-of-the-box functionality of limiting the quantity of products within a single order.

Frankly speaking, this is not the best website that could be built on Magento 2, but the judges have decided that our result is the best among the teams!
